You could look at a mix vs purebred. Something that incorporates the desired high drive/intensity characteristics with something that will temper those characteristics at the same time ie a border collie/lab or border collie/gsd mix. You can get the athletic build, intelligence, energy, easier to train aspects, but not nessicarily the harder to handle high drive over the top attitude that can be found in border collies and some lines of GSD. Look at rescue groups in your area let them know what your parameters are they will be able to help you more. Note: I would NOT recommend a high drive dog to a first time owner that is unfamiliar with the aspects of its breed
