Is it possible that people are prejudice against people with mental disorders?

Those with mental disorders are treated like people who choose to behave badly. I was advised by my career counselor not to divulge to possible employers that I am being treated for bipolar disorder. Most people will never see mental illness for what it is. A medical condition like diabetes, asthma, etc. I am so grateful for a mother who understands.
