Go with anything Jackson. They are a mainstay in metal guitar today. The higher end ones are pretty ridiculous as far as tone goes. As far as pedals go, there are a ton of people that still use the TS-1 Tubescreamer. To be honest, a good way to start is to get a guitar and an even better amp. If you can dial in a tone you really love from just a guitar and amp, keeping the signal path as dry (without effects) as possible, it makes it much easier to dial in a tone if you decide to get some pedals.
